Editorial

Hi Lovelies, another hectic month has come and gone and I find myself wondering about the lengths we will go to for our caking passion. Last week I was stoked to win a 900mm stainless steel whirlpool oven on eBay for $102.50! Woohoo!! I was so happy! We started working out how we were going to move the kitchen around and I could already imagine how little time I would have to spend baking (ack) with my new fancy schmancy massive oven! So off we set on Sunday to travel to the back of beyond....an hour and a half later, we're climbing up a one lane pothole riddled GOAT TRACK on the side of a cliff in our SO NOT a 4wheel drive, people mover!

I have a massive phobia of heights in cars....weird I know...I could have sat there with my legs over the side but I just can’t cope with getting 10ft from the edge in a car....screwy! Anyhoo....so we're making our way along the road to hell when another car comes towards us!!! I freak and lose my MINDl!! They kept coming!! I was so busy having a mental breakdown of gigantic proportions that I didn't see the tiny postage stamp sized piece of cliff we then parked on, while I'm literally foaming at the mouth! The kids (miniature demons) in the backseat of the other car were highly amused and even pressed their noses up against the glass as the laughed and pointed at me!!

So we eventually found the house among the forest of trees, on the side of a mountain! So we climb up to the house....a million stairs with no railings (!) and I'm thinking 'No one knows we're here...we're going to disappear without a trace' Now, a normal, sane person would say that no fancy schmancy bargain oven is worth becoming a possible serial killer couples next victims right? Nah....I could see it sitting there all shiny and lovely almost within reach!

Anyhoo....the boys quickly take it to the car...I pay, trying to keep one eye on the lady and one eye on my hubby in case he gets whacked over the head by the scary boyfriend...I practically throw the money at her, then I bolt down the rickety stairs, dragging poor bewildered Jasmine with me on her tiny, short little legs, down the near vertical driveway, over more potholes and leap into the car, lock the doors...back down the single lane goat track and drive nearly 2 hours home...phew!

Woohoo so excited we lived AND I have my fancy schmancy new oven…..yeah...we got it inside….that thing is a busted broken down piece of rubbish THAT the lady didn't even clean!!! Gag!! We should get $10 bucks from the scrap metal man if I flash him some cleavage :/

So what crazy lengths have you gone to for your caking passion? Please tell me I'm not alone...

The very first Cakes Decor Gazette Editors Choice for July is....

Golden Dragon Wedding Cake

by

Kristen Erich of Bliss Pastry

Kristen has said this was her Dream Cake....I can certainly see why! There is more skill and creativity and artistry per inch in this cake than an acre of one of mine! Kristen never ceases to impress with her incredible use of colour, floral making perfection and amazing sculpting and painting skills.

Work like this makes me feel priveleged to gaze upon it. This is cake as an art form. Kristen never shies away from bold colours that some mere mortals would never dare to try...and she never disappopoints.

This creation is certainly a Dream Cake...if only my mind could dream a dream so grand....

Back in June, lovely Tracy James of Cotton & Crumbs fame travelled to Australia from the UK to conduct classes at Whimsical Cakehouse and to film video tutorials for Cake Masters.  She packed in an amazing amount in her short time here and impressed everyone her stamina, warmth and enthusiasm.  I was fortunate enough to meet with Tracy and interview her.

15 Minutes of Fame
Man Bakes Cake for Amy!

We all love Rudy of Man Bakes Cake and his fabulous work but did you know that he recently made a cake (one of my faves) for the opening night of “Into The Woods” being performed on an incredible set in Central Park, New York? His brilliant sketch was based on the set design by John Lee Beatty.

The cast included Amy Adams as pictured below. You can find more pictures of this glorious cake on his Facebook page Man Bakes Cake.

Congratulations Rudy! Another stellar creation!

We love keeping up with exciting news and events for our readers. If you or someone you know has been in the media recently, just post the information in our forum '15 Minutes of Fame'. Each month we will choose some to share here in the Gazette.

Cake This Tute Review

Rainbow Sprinkle Tutorial

The Greedy Baker

This is the cake I used Kate's fabulous Rainbow Sprinkle Tutorial for. I followed the lovelly, easy to follow photos and just replaced the rainbow sprinkles with Sanding Sugar for lots of blingy sparkle, perfect for a 60th Wedding Anniversary.

I have seen this tutorial used many times...I have even seen it stolen by an unscrupulous page and re-watermarked! So please take time to thank Kate from The Greedy Baker for taking the time to put such a wonderful tute together for us for FREE!!!

Thanks Kate, we love it! :) xx

Kitchen Talk

Cake Feedback by Mrsmscakes

Is it just me….or does anyone else who runs a cake business get paranoid when you don’t get feedback from your customers on a cake you have made for them??
Sometimes I make and deliver a cake to someone and I never hear anything again from them. No Facebook or website feedback of thanks. Don’t get me wrong I have never had any complaint feedback but equally does anyone else find that with no feedback at all it makes you worry the customer didn’t like it? Sometimes I even email saying if they liked the cake I would appreciate a lovely note on FB or website & I hear nothing back. Is this Normal? Or am I just being completely paranoid and worrying unnecessarily?

You can let us know what you think here
