Editorial

This month Lovelies I think I may have experienced the peak of my Caking Career! Could it all be downhill from here? What do you do once you have interviewed the person you most idolise and admire in your chosen obsession? AND...did she notice that you stole the cup she was drinking from??? Kidding!!!!

All of these questions have been bouncing around my still bewildered brain since I was privileged enough to interview the fabulous, amazing and genuinely lovely Karen Marie Portaleo. Karen was in Sydney for a week recently to film some incredible video tutorials for Cake Masters and I was invited to go along and interview her.

I was incredibly nervous as not only is she my Kryptonite in a ‘fan-girl’ way (cringe) but she was also my first face to face interview! It’s so much easier doing these things via email. But she was utterly lovely, down to earth and even more gorgeous in real life than any of her photos show us. We sat out in the beautiful Sydney sunshine looking over the water and she put me at ease as we talked and laughed and I even remembered to ask her some questions that I hope you will enjoy.

The interview will be published on CakesDecor.com in a few days so keep an eye out for that and I highly recommend you check out Karen’s Cake Masters tutorials when they are released…they’re amazing and I guarantee you will be delighted with the topics she has covered! I can’t wait to get my hands on them 

April Interview - Neli Josefsen

Bio

Hello, friends!

My name is Neli Josefsen. Living in Norway. A native Bulgarian though.

An ex-musician. There are those who say, there is no such thing as ex-musician. Well, they are maybe right.
My job with music has given me so enormously much, I consider myself extremely lucky to live the life I have had so far.

Long time ago I came to Norway as a musician, and I stay there. Grateful to all the nice people that I have been given the chance to meet through the years.

15 Minutes of Fame

Can we show George Lucas THE most amazing R2D2 cake ever made?

This is sort of a prediction of 15 minutes of Fame ;)

Without a doubt, this is the best R2D2 cake I personally have ever seen! It has only been online for just over 24 hours and apart from being our Editors Choice and #1 for May the Fourth…it has been shared hundreds of times on facebook.

Every now and then a cake comes along that propels a Decorator into the stratosphere of the worlds Cake Decorating Elite…I believe this is one of those cakes folks.

Click here to read more about Jacinta of Kidacity's amazing cake!

We love keeping up with exciting news and events for our readers. If you or someone you know has been in the media recently, just post the information in our forum '15 Minutes of Fame'. Each month we will choose some to share here in the Gazette.

Monthly Top 5

Most Popular Cake for April

Africa

Neli

Neli says she made the figures for this incredible work and then lost her inspiration...I'm so glad she rediscovered it because I feel privileged to be able to gaze upon it! This cake represents one of the best examples of mixing both 2D and 3D elements to perfection! I found my self zooming in to see just which figures were real and which were painted onto the cake.

Neli's work is always amazing and this beauty doesn't disappoint!

Fairy Bird

ChokoLate

Nadia said she was inspired by a feather to make this l figurine called Fairy Bird. Every delicate inch of her is total perfection...her dainty hands, her tip toeing feet, her soft floating skirt all create a positively ethereal aura. She is truly sublime!

City-Chic

SweetCharms

I love the way this cake almost shows a second personality...the formal design with it's structural elements flowing seamlessly into elegant ruffles for a touch of whimsy. I adore the way she has moved those pleats into ruffles and I'm hoping to get a chance to try the technique one day. Fabulous work Desiree :)

Rainbow Ruffles

Ana Remigio

Ana made this pretty birthday cake for her very lucky sister as a surprise. Her lovely colourful ruffles hide a delicious secret of colourful, tasty layers...you can see more pics of the inside of this cake by clicking on the photo.

I love the Dahlia too, Ana's first, I'm very keen to try one myself :)

African Wedding Cake

Callicious

Gorgeous Calli won Silver at CI for this amazing creation! You can really feel the love of her African childhood when you take in all the stunning detail this cake offers. Calli is an artist through and through and a gracious and beautiful human being...I will never tire of seeing her work and marveling at her artistry. I know that this win is the first of many. Incredible Calli! :)

Cake This Tute

With so many amazing tutorials available on CakesDecor.com it is getting harder and harder to choose just one to spotlight each month.

This months gorgeous Cake This Tute features the Stained Glass Effect Cake by TashasTastyTreats!

I adore this technique and have been dying to find an excuse to try it so here we are! remember that if you use the tutorial to make a cake and post it on CakesDecor.com it may be used in next months Gazette!

Thanks for sharing so much hard work and gorgeousness Tasha :)

Cake This Tute Review by Raewyn

This month my tutorial review is

Bi Colour Rose Tutorial

by Lisa of

LMCakeDesign

Lisa has made this tutorial really easy to follow with loads of clear pictures and great instructions.

My rose isn't as lovely as hers, but I'm looking forward to seeing it in place on the Mothers Day cake I'm donating to Holly's school fundraiser later this week :)

Just in case anyone was wondering what I did with my Surfer Girl - here is the cake I made using the fabulous Wireframed Figurine Tutorial by Nicholas Ang of Cake Over Heel.

She was so easy to make with his tutorial, I can’t wait to make another. Thanks for sharing with us Nicholas :)

Kitchen Talk

This months forum topic is bound to get you wracking your brains. How many male decorators do you know? Can you name nore than a few? I personally know some brilliant male decorators and they stand bravely in their small numbers.

Can you add to the list of names we're slowly coming up with?

Thanks Paul for coming up with such a great topic :)
